Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of The CW Torch. It is officially Fall, and so today I wanted to talk about the books I wanted to read for the Fall season. The books I will be talking about, I think will be perfect for those crisp autumn months, even though it might not feel like that where I live right now. I have a lot of books on this list, so without further ado, let’s get into the books! Vengeful by V.E. Schwab (Villains #2)

*Since this is the second season book of a series, I will be giving the synopsis of the first book, Vicious, strictly for no spoilers. Synopsis: Victor and Eli, who started off as college roommates, shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility. That under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong. Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find— aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end? Why I Want to Read: It’s no secret, but I love any book that V.E. Schwab puts out, and every time a new book of her’s comes out, I have to drop everything and read it. Not only that, but a dream came true last night, and I got to meet her at the book signing for her Vengeful tour. I think this would be the perfect book to read during the Fall season, because it is centered around Villains and the anti-hero story. These Villains are some of my most favorite Villains of all-time, even though they are absolutely terrible. This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab (Monsters of Verity #1)

Synopsis: There’s no such thing as safe in a city at war, a city overrun with monsters. In this dark urban fantasy, a young woman and a young man must choose whether to become heroes or Villains—and friends or enemies— with the future of their home at stake. Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city— a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent— but he’s one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music. When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, who's just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. But Kate discovers August’s secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives. Why I Want to Read: Another Victoria Schwab book, that would be perfect for the month of October. A sort of Romeo and Juliet story, with a mix of monsters, which I’m all here for. But, then again, I’m here for anything Schwab. It will also be interesting to see how she tackles Young Adult, since she is such an unapologetic and gruesome adult fiction writer. Escaping from Houdini by Kerri Maniscalco

*I won’t get into the synopsis of this book, because I’ve talked about this series many time before, and because it’s the third book of the series. However, I will mention that it follows our main character Audrey Rose, aboard a luxury liner. Why I Want to Read: I tend to read these books around the Fall time, because they are so full of mystery. Mystery is a great genre to read during the Autumn season, especially around Halloween. This series always keeps me on my toes, and on the edge of my seat. Kerri’s writing is very creepy, with just the right amount of added history. This is one of my most anticipated releases of the year, and I can’t wait to read it around Halloween time. My Plain Jane by Cynthia Hand, Jodi Meadows, and Brody Ashton

Synopsis: You may think you know the story. After a miserable childhood, penniless orphan Jane Eyre embarks on a new life as a governess at Thornfield Hall. There, she meets one dark, brooding Mr. Rochester. Despite their significant age gap, and his uneven temper, they fall in love— and, she marries him. Or does she? Prepare for an adventure of Gothic proportions, in which all is not as it seems, a certain gentleman is hiding more than skeletons in his closets, and one orphan Jane Eyre, aspiring author Charlotte Bronte, and supernatural investigator Alexander Blackwood are about to be drawn together on the most epic ghost hunt this side of Wuthering Heights. Why I Want to Read: I absolutely love reading Historical Fiction during the Fall and Winter months, and this Historical Fiction has a little paranormal twist to it. I have heard so many wonderful things about the Lady Janies, and I can’t wait to read this paranormal twist on the classic tale of Jane Eyre. Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl

Synopsis: Once upon a time, back at Darrow-Harker School, Beatrice Hartley and her six best friends were the cool kids, the beautiful ones. Then the shocking death of Jim— their creative genius and Beatrice’s boyfriend—changed everything. One year after graduation, Beatrice is retuning to Wincroft—the seaside estate where they spent so many nights sharing secrets, crushes, plans to change the world—hoping she’ll get to the bottom of the dark questions gnawing at her about Jim’s death. But as the night plays out in a haze of stilled jokes and unfathomable silence, Beatrice sense she's never going to know what really happened. Then a mysterious man knocks on the door. Blithely, he announces the impossible: time for them has become stuck, snagged on a splinter that can only be removed if the former friends make the harshest of decisions. Now Beatrice has one last shot at answers… and at life. And so begins the Neverworld Wake. Why I Want to Read: This atmospheric mystery, sounds like the perfect book to read next to a burning candle, wrapped up in a warm blanket. It sounds like an extremely unique mystery, mixed with some added Supernatural elements. Exactly, my kind of book, that I love to read during the Fall. There you have it folks, those are all the books I want to read during the Autumn season, which is my absolutely favorite season of the year. I can’t wait to read all of these books, by a warm, crackling fire, and a steaming cup of hot apple cider. I hope everybody enjoys the Fall season, as the leaves start to change, and the air becomes a bit more crisp. TTFN and Happy Reading, Chynna Williams @TheCWTorch
